OCR: The outstanding feature of the Diesel engine is its high efficiency at full and part load, (typically 25-40%), and very low fuel consumption at idle. These are a direct result of the fixed (high) compression ratio at all loads, and the lack of air pumping losses. An additional advantage of the diesel is that it can burn a lower grade of fuel, which inherently has more energy per gallon, and usually costs less than gasoline. Diesels can also be designed to burn various grades of fuel (including gasoline) with some increase in injection pump costs, as is done in some military vehicles. Note that if it were not for mechanical friction and auxiliary power requirements, the diesel would theoretically require zero power at no load! This is not true of the gas engine.
